Description
Aquvait is one of a few spirits whose name is derivated from Latin "Aqua Vitae" or "water of Life." Of Scandinavian origin, the spirit base is typically grain or potato and the primary flavoring agent is caraway. Other herbs can be used in the production of aquavit as well. Anise seed, dill, fennel, and coriander to name a few. But usually the dominant flavor is caraway.
Aroma:
Caraway and anise are usually dominant. But the aromas can range greatly, often with very herbal, spicy aromas. Oak aged versions can have toasty, smoky, or vanilla aromas.
Color:
Color ranges from clear to herbal hued yellow. In more heavily oak aged versions it can even lean towards amber or brown. Coloring with caramel is permitted and occurs in some examples.
Flavor:
The flavor of aquavit can vary greatly depending on the herbs included in the recipe. The dominant flavor is typically caraway, but some examples taste strongly of anise and have an oak barrel influence as well.
Strength:
Typically bottled at 40% alcohol by volume.
